Macabre; mysterious; raw; otherworldly… the work of photographer Francesca Woodman
When we first discovered Francesca Woodman’s photographs (an accessible first-pass compilation) we immediately gravitated to her more than 800+ monoliths and the story of a photographer and artist who produced an incredible body of work in a really short period of time. Woodman is best known for her black and white pictures featuring herself and female models. Many of the more than 800 prints produced by Woodman during her lifetime are untitled, known only by date and location. Models in her photographs are often seen merged with their surroundings. Black & white and movement is core in Woodman’s work. But her photos blur influences – surrealism, macabre; mysterious; raw; otherworldly; eroticism, monochrome, gothic-fiction, narrative, abstract, horror etc., producing more than 800+ works before she committed suicide, age 22.
