“Pink Flamingo” LIVE by Fury Young
I wrote “Pink Flamingo” on a subway train, the yellow Q. I wrote several pieces featured in Meat & Milk on the subway, though I consider “Pink Flamingo” one of the better ones. I had just done an outdoor show, one of my first poetry performances that wasn’t an open mic. Master Lee had got me the gig, which paid nothing and was out in Sunset Park amid this outdoor market.
Master Lee is a New York street performer I grew up watching in Washington Square Park, who I have become friends and collaborators with decades later. Don’t miss his blurb for Meat & Milk where he calls me a “ghetto visionary” — something I’ve been describing myself as since birth.
Well I’d just done the show, a daytime thing, and was on my way back to Bushwick. Though I’m good at hiding it, I deal with weird inhibitions about performing, and certainly did back then a lot more. So, I felt after that performance I’d really broken a wall in my head; I felt free and happy. I was inspired at a rapid pace and just wrote down all my pride and doubt and fear and jubilation. The poem is a sort of rave to the heavens.
Even though I felt inspired, I couldn’t share that feeling with the medium-crowded train. Always an odd feeling. There was this little girl across the subway from me, directly opposite. She was looking at me and I could feel it the whole time. At the end of writing the piece I finally looked up at her. I’m not sure if I smiled or not, or what her expression back was, but it’s safe to say she inspired something. So, I’ll dedicate this poem to her — the little delight in pink sneakers!
About The Book
Meat & Milk is the debut poetry book of Fury Young, a born and bred Lower East Side NYC poet. The poems, along with the original notebook pages they written on jump off each page of this collection with urgency and lust. Fury writes of his world face value style, with surprise surrealist and abstract turns. Subway cars, deep depression demons, incarcerated lifers, city lovers, sex, rock n’ roll all the time, crackheads, and food is what you’ll find in here. Walk inside the mind of a young poet coming of age in a jaded city, an “incarcerated rabbi with so many questions,” a “porn star without a face,” an “amateur philosopher.” Meat & Milk is a poetry book for the ages that is very much of this age. Whether you are living in a concrete city or doing life in a concrete tomb, you will find truth in Fury’s words and devour Meat & Milk.

Reviews for Meat & Milk
“In a time of fake digital worlds, Fury is a scream for the Real, a ghetto visionary; an authentic downtown voice which channels the rage of the incarcerated, survival on the streets, and raw dog sexuality.” – Master Lee, legendary NYC street performer, author of How To Be An Artist and Not Lose Your Mind
Fury’s open eyes and open heart allow all that he sees — streets, subway seats, sad faces, singers and songs — to simmer and shape into life-filled lines of image and sound. Meat & Milk gives — not only pages of neatly typed poems — but, also, the source of these poems: the scratches in notebooks, the quotes that spark, drawings and poem’s lines.” – Judith Tannenbaum
Poets don’t usually write poetry. They become poetry. They inhale and exhale metaphors and alliterations like trees give us air. Fury Young is such a poet. His poems are the blueprint of his mind and his soul. His heart provides the passion. – Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets, author of Branches of the Tree of Life: The Collected Poems of Abiodun Oyewole 1969-2013
“Sincere, gritty, and powerful. Fury Young’s work correlates with everything going on in the world right now. Amazing collection of poems. Young speaks nothing but the truth.” – Amazon Customer, Amazon
Eloquent and real. A raw, precise, and nuanced portrait of New York City life. – Amazon Customer, Amazon
“With dazzling candor, Young digs into the marrow of his inner being that ultimately instigates a call to action through music and the arts. Meat & Milk is full of the stuff of the everyday that is woven into a bigger, more ambitious picture. The result is a brew that is gripping, moving, sarcastic, innovative, sometimes hilarious, and often uncomfortable, that will resonate within you as it did in me.” – Gabrielle David, publisher of 2Leaf Press
